I’m not sure the world needs another blog. It feels a little cliché. I considered naming this blog “WTF Are You Thinking?”. Much catchier and possibly a more accurate description of this midlife crisis upheaval. It’s often the underlying reaction when I share that we are taking a sabbatical from our high-paced jobs in tech, selling our house, packing everything we own into storage, and moving our two boys under three overseas to a country we’ve never been to. And yet, it’s happening. In two weeks, we will lock the door to our first family home for the last time and kick off this journey.
Which brings me back to WTF are you thinking? It all comes back to my 2023 word of the year – nourish. Between a multi-year pandemic, giving birth to our first son in isolation, my husband and I both working in high stress jobs, I’m not sure we even know how to fill up our cups – and we need to. I realized we shouldn’t be waiting for a catastrophic diagnosis or retirement in 30 years to snap out of this rat race. Josh and I always dreamed of living internationally, maybe not quite like this. So, we are heading off, in search of nourishment. In search of rest. In search of the joy in simple pleasures. In search of time. All with a two-year-old and three-month-old in tow. Again, WTF are you thinking? Well, I guess we will find out.
Quote that resonated with me
“I hope you find the courage to change your life. In the small ways, in the big ways, in every way that matters. I hope you do not end this story with a heart full of regrets. I hope you do not spend your years just waiting for your life to begin. I hope you realize this is not the practice run, this is not the preview. This is it. There is nothing to do but leap. There is nothing to do but allow yourself to exist as boldly and honestly as you can.” -Brianna Wiest
